September 2017

Welcome Back Roosevelt Students and Families!

I wanted to take a minute to say welcome back to the new school year. There have been many exciting things happening at school over the summer. Currently, there are two concurrent construction projects in progress. The mini building is slated to finish construction on November 30th. At this point, they are telling me the field on the playground will be ready to go for the first day of school and the fence line will come back to the exterior of the mini building. The architectural phase of the main building is complete at this time and construction is set to begin in May 2018. I will give more specific updates regarding construction phasing and details of construction during my presentation time at curriculum night on September 28.

This year, the Roosevelt staff remains committed to ensuring that ALL students are learning at high levels in a caring and supportive environment. We will do this by maintaining a caring environment that teaches Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. We will continue to use the Second Step curriculum to teach students how to learn, control their emotions, solve problems appropriately, and have empathy for others. We will continue to have thirty-minute daily intervention/enrichment blocks, where students will receive targeted instruction related to essential learning outcomes. Staff will use the weekly Wednesday early release time to analyze individual student performance related to the essential learning outcomes and design intervention/enrichment plans. As your administrator, I hold myself accountable to monitor and evaluate this work in order to ensure we achieve the goals outlined above.

Mr. Shaughnessy, Principal

School Start/End Times

Roosevelt will start every day at 9:10 a.m. The gym and cafeteria will open in the morning time at 9:00 a.m. Please do not drop students off before 9:00 a.m. If students are dropped off before that time, you will be called to come and pick them up. The school day will end at 3:32 p.m. If you are picking up your student at the end of the day, please ensure that students are picked on-time. The first day of school for students in grade K-1 is September 6th and September 11th for Kindergarten.

Early Release Wednesday

Beginning on September 13th, we will have a fifty-minute early release every week. On these days, school will begin at the usual time and release at 2:42 p.m. It is very important that students are picked up on-time.

Class Lists and Family Access

For confidentiality reasons, class lists will no longer be available for viewing on the window outside the main office. To view class placement for this year, you will need to be able to log into Family Access in Skyward. For directions on how to do this, follow this link. Information is also posted on the Roosevelt website. You will receive an email as soon as placement is available for viewing.

Change in Plans and Bus Notes

Please try to work hard to set routines for your students in terms of how they arrive and go home at the beginning and end of each day. If plans change, due to an unforeseen emergency, please call the attendance line (360-596-6703) and let us know of your change in plans. This is to be utilized for emergency changes only. If you have told your child before they left for school, who is picking them up, the office does not need to be notified. We only need to be notified if your original plans have changed due to an emergency that occurred after they left for school.

Traffic Circle and Parking Procedures

The traffic circle in front of the school is for families who can quickly pick up/drop off their children at the beginning and end of the day. It is important that you pull as far forward as possible and remain in your vehicle. If you need to help your student into a car seat or do a hand-off with the teacher, please park in the parking lot (or along the streets surrounding the school) and walk in to retrieve your child.

Visitors, Volunteers, and Signing-in

All visitors and volunteers must sign-in at the main office before proceeding down the hallway. When you sign in, the machine will print a badge with your picture. Please wear your badge in a visible location and use your legal name. If you do not have a badge or are not wearing it in a visible location, you will be asked to return to the main office. This includes before/after school and is done to ensure the safety of your children at school.

Volunteer Paperwork

All volunteers must renew paperwork with the district every year. If you plan to chaperone field trips or volunteer in the school, it would be a great idea to get the application done now. It can take up to 4 business days to get approved. Here is the link to complete paperwork.

Back-to-School BBQ

Our annual back-to-school BBQ and supply drop-off will be held on September 5th. The supply drop-off will take place from 3:30-4:00. The all-school BBQ will happen from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on the playground behind the school.Everyone is welcome to attend.

Last year, 10% of our student population missed more than 20 days of school. This means that over 40 students missed approximately 10% of the school year. Research has proven that there is a high correlation between school attendance and academic performance and success, while absence from school is often the greatest single cause of poor performance and achievement. While I understand that some absences are unavoidable due to illness, medical appointments, or family emergency, the above statistic is one that is in need of improvement. Please help us by scheduling appointments outside of school hours and holding family vacations for times that school is not in session. Our school website clearly explains the difference between an excused and unexcused absence. It also clearly outlines the procedures the school must follow for students experiencing frequent absences. Follow this link to review the information related to attendance. Please also keep in mind that if students arrive more than 30 minutes late in the morning or leave more than 30 minutes early at the end of the day, it will be recorded as a ½ day absence. Thank you for your help in getting students to school on-time every day. Doing this will help us reach our mission of ALL students learning at high levels.
