Veteran’s Day Assembly

Our annual Veteran’s Day assembly will be held on Thursday, November 7th at 1:20 PM in the Roosevelt Gym.  On this day, the Reeves Middle School Band will be on-hand to play a variety of patriotic songs.  If you are active duty, a veteran, or have a veteran in your family, please consider joining us for this event.

Winter Weather and Clothing Request

As the weather turns wet and cold, I need to ask two favors.

  1. Please take a minute to write your child’s name in all clothing that might be removed during the day (coats, hats, gloves, etc.).If you have a name inside the clothing, it will be returned to your child as soon as it is found.Otherwise, it will have to live in the lost and found. It is really hard to see all the great clothing that gets donated multiple times per year because we do not have capacity for the volume of unlabeled clothing left behind.

  2. Also, please put a change of clothes in your child’s backpack (underwear, socks, shirt, pants).Keep it all in a Ziploc bag at the bottom of the backpack. That way, if your child gets wet or muddy at school, they will have a way to change without us calling you out of work.We want to help take good care of your child while they are away from you.We do not have enough clothes in the nurse’s office to meet this need (nor do the kids want to wear the items in the nurse’s office).

Thank you for your help with these action items.  It would make a huge difference if everyone would do this.

Roosevelt Equity Council

This month, the Roosevelt Equity Council is providing an opportunity for all of us to honor and recognize individuals from Native American backgrounds.  This project is something that can be done at home and will help us create a visual display for students to interact with through the month.  The purpose of this activity is to begin changing the narrative around Indigenous People’s Day and Thanksgiving.  The members of the Equity Council are committed to removing barriers in our community for people from traditional underserved backgrounds.

November Lockdown Drill

As I stated in the October newsletter, I am taking a few minutes to talk about emergency drills before they happen so that parents can help me support kids with understanding these drills.  A common language is essential to help our kids have an accurate understanding of what is happening in different situations.

On November 6th at 10:00 AM, we are going to practice an intruder drill.  These drills are necessary to help all of us know how to respond in the event of an intruder. Over the course of the past two years, teachers have been taught to run, hide, or fight.  The response they choose is based upon the situation they find themselves in.  If an intruder is in a different part of the building and they think they can get out safely, they are encouraged to make that decision.  If the intruder is in their immediate vicinity, they have been taught to lock down and hold their location.

During the drill on the 6th, we are only going to practice the “hide” response.  When explaining this to the students, we are telling them that we practice this drill in case someone is in the building that is not supposed to be there. As with all of our drills, we teach the kids that the most important thing they can do is listen and follow the direction of the adult in the room.

Yearbook

Yearbooks cost $15 and are available for online order through April 30th 2020.  Flyers were sent home in blue folders with instructions on how to order, but if you don't have yours, you can also find instructions on how to order on our website.

New this year, you can now sponsor a yearbook to go to our scholarship yearbooks!  When ordering your yearbook, you should see a sponsor option as well as the standard yearbook option.  If you would like to sponsor a yearbook this year, just click "sponsor" and purchase as you would a standard yearbook.  You will need to make a separate order to place an order for a Sponsor Yearbook.  Please note that while the sponsor name and child fields are required, that information will not be included at the end of the year when yearbooks are passed out.  You will need to make a separate order to place an order for a Sponsor Yearbook.
