Lifeskills and Positive Behavior Supports
On Wednesday of last week, Captain Lifeskill (Mr. Shaughnessy) visited every classroom and had the opportunity to celebrate individual students who really stood out in their ability to show empathy towards others. Having empathy means having the ability to walk in someone else’s shoes. It involves talking to and paying attention to other people so that we get to know people for the individuals that they are. Having empathy allows us to approach and support other people in a kind and respectful way.
In February, we are going to shift our attention to the Lifeskill of kindness! Kindness fits perfectly with February and Valentine’s Day. Showing kindness for others also requires students to know and understand empathy. To kick off our month of kindness, we are having a Lifeskill assembly at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 6th. As with all of our assemblies, this one is open to anyone who wants to attend. We always love seeing our parents!

Measles outbreak in Washington
Gov. Jay Inslee has declared a state of emergency in all Washington counties in response to confirmed cases of measles in the state. While there are no confirmed cases of measles to date in the Olympia School District, we encourage families to learn about this highly contagious infectious disease. The Washington State Department of Health urges everyone to check their immunization records to verify they are fully immunized. For more information, please visit the measles page on the OSD website.
Learn All About Kindergarten
Kindergarten registration begins on Monday, March 4th for the 2019-20 school year. In preparation for registration, incoming families are invited to join us to learn all about kindergarten on Saturday February 9th from 10:00-11:30 AM at Capital High School (2707 Conger Ave. NW, Olympia). The event begins at 10:00 AM with a welcome presentation by Olympia School District Superintendent Patrick Murphy.
An information fair follows in the school Commons where parents/guardians can meet staff from elementary schools around the district. The event is also a chance to learn about registering for kindergarten, using Skyward Family Access, riding the bus, alternative kindergarten options, before and after school child care, and community partner services.
Is Your Child Struggling in School?
If you ever find yourself in a position where you know your child is struggling with something in school and you feel like you need some help, please consider filling out our very simple help form. You can access the help form from the home page of the Roosevelt website or by clicking on this link. The help form can be used to access any form of help (from academic to social/emotional). School staff check the help form regularly and have a goal of reaching out within 24 hours or receiving the request. We hope this will help in situations where you do not know where to go for help.
Attendance Matters
This is the time of the year that so many of us, adults and students alike, struggle with being sick. While the Roosevelt community strives for excellent attendance, that message is tempered with a reminder to strive for good health as well. At school we take extra precautions to keep our classrooms sanitized and the nursing staff monitors the health symptoms presented to them in the health room. At home parents can help by making sure their child gets enough sleep, eats healthy meals and exercises regularly in order to stay in good health and boost their resistance to disease.
Keep in mind that complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and may not be a reason to keep them home. If a child seems anxious about going to school, seek out support from the school. Whenever possible, try to arrange medical appointments outside of the school day. If your child has a chronic disease, make sure the school staff is aware. We understand that children get sick, and when they do, please keep them home and let them get fully better, for their health and the health of others. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help your family get back to good health. The message we want you to hear is that we are here to support you and your family in working towards excellent attendance as well as good health!

Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books (BOB) is in full swing! Books are flying in and out of the library at a brisk pace. Kids are reading books they might not otherwise choose and finding new authors and genres that they love! Due to the upcoming closure and rebuilding of the cafeteria, we have moved the final battle up to Friday, March 22. The battle will take place in the gym starting at 2:15 PM. Parents are invited to attend. Seven teams (one from each class in 4th & 5th grades) will vie for medals in an exciting competition. There will be one winning team from 4th grade and one from 5th grade.

Read-A-Thon Fundraiser, throughout the month of February
February is Read-A-Thon month! This is a great way to encourage a love of reading and raise money for our amazing school! Participants can be entered into raffles for fun prizes throughout the month. Each student was sent home with a Readathon packet containing the rules for the event, a sponsor sheet, and the minute tracking calendar page. Please sign off on your child’s at-home reading on the calendar page as well as the three Weekly Check-In slips they will receive, which will say when they should come back. The Weekly Check-in slips not only help with the bar graph kids will watch grow on the PTA bulletin board, they also enter your child into the weekly raffle drawing for participating! On Friday, March 1st, please return all their Readathon paperwork and the sponsor money they’ve collected, so they can be eligible for fun prizes. Grand prizes of a $75 gift card will be awarded to the top reader in the three grade groups (K-1, 2-3, and 4-5) as well as the top fundraiser for the school. The awards assembly will be the morning of March 8th. Thanks for your help fostering a strong love of reading in all Roosevelt students.
