Roosevelt Ravens Review

March 2019

Now That Was a Lot of Snow Days

It sure was nice to get back to work this last week! Students were excited to be back to their routines and see their friends. We spent some time getting back into the swing of things last week by reviewing expectations and practicing routines. The students did a great job of working together to remember school expectations. As we move into our first full week of school, please help us by getting the kids to bed on-time and getting back into home routines. Routines and consistency are really important for our elementary age students because they reduce stress and help our students feel safe. These are prerequisite skills for learning. Thank you for all of your help getting back into the routine of school life.

March Lifeskill Assembly

This month, we will hold our Lifeskill assembly on March 6th at 2:00 PM. We try to link the assembly with dismissal to make it easier for interested parents to attend. This month, we will focus on teaching the concept of respect. From a school perspective, being respectful means treating other people like you want to be treated, using good manners, not threatening, hitting, or hurting anyone, and dealing peacefully with anger and disagreements. School staff will be watching for respectful behavior through the month of March. Individual students will earn Lifeskill tickets for showing respectful behavior. Captain Lifeskill will return in late March to recognize individual students who stood out from the crowd in terms of their ability to demonstrate respectful behavior. I write about respectful behavior in the newsletter so that you can help us by reinforcing these concepts at home as well.

Conference Week in March

March 26th through the 29th have been set aside for individual family conferences. To make this happen, we will be on a half-day schedule for each conference day and release students at 12:15 PM.

For scheduling purposes, we will once again use Skyward Family Access. The conferencing tab in Family Access will be open for families with more than one child at Roosevelt from March 14 through the 15th. The conferencing tab will be open to everyone beginning on the 16th of March and will close down on the 22nd. Please make sure to use Family Access to schedule your time during the appropriate open window. We look forward to seeing everyone during conference week.

Detailed instructionsOpening in a new window will be posted to our school website, along with other important information you might need for conferences. You will be able to access the materials by clicking on the link in the announcements section on the homepage of the Roosevelt website.

Is Your Child Struggling in School?

If you ever find yourself in a position where you know your child is struggling with something in school and you feel like you need some help, please consider filling out our very simple help form. You can access the help form from the home page of the Roosevelt websiteOpening in a new window or by clicking on this linkOpening in a new window. The help form can be used to access any form of help (from academic to social/emotional). School staff check the help form regularly and have a goal of reaching out within 24 hours or receiving the request. We hope this will help in situations where you do not know where to go for help.

Class Picture Day

March 20th is class picture day. Pictures will happen during the school day. This is a great day to send the kids to school looking sharp!

NOISE Opera Assembly:

On March 27th at 9:30 AM, students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will be visited by an opera group from Seattle. The NOISE opera group has been performing opera for elementary schools for over 30 years. Roosevelt is one of two schools in the district that will have the opportunity to see this show. This year, the opera company is excited to bring us one scene from Rossini’s delightful opera, The Barber of Seville. Opera is a wonderful form of storytelling that bring together elements of story, music, theatre, and visual art. This opportunity is made possible because of the Olympia School District Performing Arts Initiative and the Olympia School District Education Foundation. Thank you to everyone who helps contribute to these important organizations.

Olympia Junior Programs (OJP)

Every year, all elementary students in the Olympia School District in grades 1-5 have the opportunity to see theatre performances at the Washington Center for Performing Arts. This month, students in first, second, and third grades will see two different performances on March 5th and 19th. On these days, we will modify the schedule so that students have lunch before they go to the performance. Buses will leave at 11:40 and return by about 1:30.
