LIBRARY NEWS

Book Swap

The Book Swap is almost here! Students spent the last week bringing in gently used books for our annual summer reading Book Swap. On Tuesday, June 4, kids who brought in books will be called down by class to choose “new” books that other kids donated to have new reading material for the summer. Our book collection period has ended, so please do not send in more books with your child. Tuesday should be a fun day of book swapping.

Returning Library Books

Calling all library books! As we begin the process of rounding up all of the library books that have been checked out this year, I ask that you scour your bookcases, closets, cars, couches, and under bed spaces for any lost library books. Lost and overdue notices will be coming home in Monday folders this week. Starting June 10, no books will be checked out to students. All books will be due back in the library on Friday, June 14. Classes will also begin participating in the Book Return Race, to see which classes can get all books returned and fines paid the quickest.  Winning classes in Primary (K-2) and Intermediate (3-5) will each win an Otter Pop party!

Summer Reading and Timberland Regional Library

On Thursday, May 30, the Timberland Regional Library came to talk to the kids about their summer library program. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories. There are a myriad of fun activities, cool performances, and prizes for kids at all Timberland branches beginning June 1. This program is free. Kids can either sign up online or at any Timberland Library branch.

The “Summer Slide” is a real thing, and reading over the summer helps prevent this, making for an easier entry back into school for your child in the fall. This infographic created by the National Summer Learning Association illustrates what can happen over the summer if a child does not read or engage in literacy activities. This article, published by the National Education Association (NEA) contains ideas and links to
resources to prevent the Summer Slide.

I hope all of you have a fun, safe, and adventure-filled summer. I look forward to seeing all of you in the fall.
