Roosevelt Ravens Review

April 2019

April Lifeskill Assembly

This month, we will hold our Lifeskill assembly on April 10th at 2:00 PM.  We try to link the assembly with dismissal to make it easier for interested parents to attend.  This month, we will focus on teaching the concept of integrity.  From a school perspective, having integrity means that we are doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.  School staff will be watching for students who demonstrate integrity through the month of April.  Individual students will earn Lifeskill tickets for showing integrity.  Captain Lifeskill will return in late April to recognize individual students who stood out from the crowd in terms of their ability to demonstrate integrity.

Talent Show

We are fast approaching my favorite day of the year.  Our annual talent show is the time where individual students have an opportunity to show off their unique abilities.  I look forward to singing, dancing, and even a few good jokes.  The Talent show will take place on April 25th.  On this day, we have two viewing opportunities.  The first one is during the school day and will begin at 2:00 PM.  The second will happen in the evening and will begin at 6:30 PM.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  I look forward to this fantastic event!

Parking Information

Due to construction progress, we are losing a significant portion of our parking lot for the duration of the school year.  It will be really important for everyone to demonstrate patience during drop-off and dismissal.  When it comes time for Spring performances, please give yourself extra time for parking.  It is going to be necessary to park on the surrounding streets and walk into the school.  Walking to school events is highly encouraged.

When using the traffic circle at the beginning and end of the day, please remember to pull forward as far as you can and remain in your vehicle at all times.  Drivers are not allowed to park and leave vehicles unattended in the traffic circle.  Thank you!

Walk and Roll

It is almost time to Walk and Roll again.  This month, we will host our 6th Walk and Roll event on Wednesday, April 10th.  Choose from 2 meeting locations:  Bigelow Park or the Olympia Little Theatre.  Both locations will gather at 8:30 AM and begin walking at 8:35 AM.  We will walk rain or shine.  Hope to see you all there!

Construction Update

The construction project at Roosevelt is about to enter its final phase.  Over spring break, the construction company will be finishing Pod A and will begin construction in the kitchen and part of the multipurpose room.  When we return in April, the movable wall partition between the cafeteria and gym will be removed and a temporary wall will be in place to separate us from the construction crew, who will be working to renovate the kitchen.  During this kitchen renovation, our students will have a smaller selection of salad bar choices. Our hot lunch selection will remain the same, and breakfast will also continue to be offered.  These changes will take place beginning on Monday, April 8th and will continue until the end of the school year.

As part of this project, the construction crew is also going to take over part of the parking lot.  The parking lot is necessary for them to be able to access the kitchen and have a space for construction materials.  They will also continue to make progress in the front of the school.

A moving company will come to the school on April 26th to help us move everyone into Pod A.  This pod will be the permanent home to all of our special service providers in the building (resource room, LEAP, preschool, counseling, etc.) and is the final piece in the remodel of the main building.

Parenting Classes at Roosevelt!

Starting Wednesday evening April 10th from 5 to 6PM, Roosevelt Elementary is offering a parenting class for parents of Second and Third Grade students.  This eight-session event is being facilitated by Kevin Oiseau, School Counselor and Allison Archer, BHR therapist.

We will be learning together from the Second Step curriculum in tandem with our students.  We will be practicing the same skills and language the Second and Third Grade students are learning in their classrooms.

We will be reading together “The Whole Brain Child, 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind,” by Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.  Please consider purchasing a copy or Roosevelt has purchased a book set which can be checked out from our library.  Additionally, we will be using the workbook developed in tandem with “The Whole Brain Child.”  Copies of the workbook will be available for us to use together.

We will be supporting each other in problem-solving real-time issues using our collective wisdom.  Parents will be encouraged to anonymously submit situations they are dealing with and together we will work to brain storm ways to apply what we are learning directly to our lives.

Child care is provided on site with light snacks (apples, cheese sticks, and popcorn) and books and games.

If you are interested in attending please contact, Kevin Oiseau, school counselor, at 360 596 6723, or[email protected]

Is Your Child Struggling in School?

If you ever find yourself in a position where you know your child is struggling with something in school and you feel like you need some help, please consider filling out our very simple help form.  You can access the help form from the home page of theRoosevelt website or by clicking on this link.  The help form can be used to access any form of help (from academic to social/emotional).  School staff check the help form regularly and have a goal of reaching out within 24 hours or receiving the request.  We hope this will help in situations where you do not know where to go for help.

5th Grade Parent Information Night

On Tuesday, April 16th, from 6:00-7:30 PM, parents will have the opportunity to visit Reeves to meet the principal, assistant principal, counselor, teachers and a panel of current Reeves Middle School students. Reeves is inviting you to see the school and meet the people who will be an integral part of your student’s lives for the next three years. They will share basic information, take you on a tour of the school and provide a short presentation by current RMS students.  The meeting is for parents only and will start in the RMS Library.

Help Needed!

First, we need someone who has experience with woodwork.  In the front entry of the school, we would like to re-create the parent bench that existed before the remodel began.  The finished product will fit around a corner of the main office in the main hallway and will be made of solid wood.  If you have the ability to help with this project, please contact Mr. Shaughnessy.  Funding is available to pay for this project.

Second, we need someone to help with re-building the garden area at the front of the school.  At this point, we need someone to help with hardscaping.  We are looking to have a concrete path installed throughout the garden.  If you have the ability to build the path, please contact Mr. Shaughnessy.  Again, funding is available to pay for this project.

LIBRARY NEWS

The Battle of the Books final battle is coming! On Friday, April 19 at 2:15, seven teams (three from fourth grade and four teams from the ALPS and fifth-grade classes) will battle for their grade level championship. Parents are welcome to attend. All participants in the final battle will receive a ribbon and the members of the winning teams will receive a medal commemorating their success!

Roosevelt’s annual STAR Night was a great success. A record-setting 335 kids and family members attended. 185 kids received over 350 books; made bookmarks; listened to distinguished guest readers, including our own Corinna Luyken reading and giving away her books; and closed the evening with our favorite - the Parade of Characters. If you missed it, we hope to see you at next year’s event.

PTA is looking for a new Auction Committee

For the past three years, the PTA Auction Committee has done an amazing job of organizing a fantastic, fun night out for adults that has successfully raised thousands of dollars to support our students.  The committee members are stepping down next year, so we are looking for volunteers who would like to step up!  They’ve done a great job of paving the way, so we just need a new group to pick up the reins. If you would like to be involved in planning a fun party and a great fundraiser, please contact Elaine Tomita at [email protected].  We would like to thank the auction committee from the last three years for all of their hard work and success in bringing such a wonderful event to our community.  Thank you Fabiana Eussen, Ashley Otheim, Heidi Livingston, Amanda Mackison, Molly McClanahan, and Trixy Eichler!!
