OCTOBER 2018

Elementary Conferences, October 23rd – 26th

This year, we will begin using Skyward Family Access to schedule conferences online.

Conference week will be held Tuesday, October 23rd through the 26th.  Students will be dismissed at 12:15 PM.  Lunch will be served on all conference days.  Monday, October 22nd is a regular school day with dismissal at 3:32 PM.

In order for the online scheduling process to work smoothly and give families with more than one child a chance to schedule conferences back-to-back, please follow the sign-up schedule below:

October 11th and 12th: Open to families with more than one child

October 15th – 19th: Open to ALL families

To facilitate the scheduling process, we have a couple of documents you might find helpful.  Click here to access a step-by-step guide for online scheduling.  You can also watch a short video by clicking on this link.  All documents will also be posted on the school website.  Please contact the main office if you need support with scheduling conferences.

Traffic Circle at Drop-off and Pick-up

The traffic circle at the front of the school is intended for quick drop-off and pick-up at the beginning and end of every school day.  Please remember to pull forward as far as possible and remain in your vehicle at all times. If you need to park your car to retrieve your child, please park in the main parking lot or on the streets surrounding the school.  Thank you!

Workroom Volunteer Request

Every day, teachers have many copies that need to be made.  This year, we are looking for a couple of regular volunteers to come and spend time in the workroom making copies for teachers.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact the main office at 360-596-6700.

Toy Donations

We are always looking for new items for rainy day recess.  If you have blocks, Legos, wooden train sets, games, action figures, or other toys that you are no longer using, please consider donating them to the school.  To donate, please contact the main office.

School-Wide Food and Snack Policy

Or school is committed to providing healthy snacks for our students during the school day.  Additionally, as we have many students with life-threatening health conditions, we have food requirements around specific classrooms.

To help with healthy food choices, please do not bring cupcakes, candy, ice cream, donuts, etc. to the classrooms.  When it comes time to celebrate birthdays and special events, we will be looking to provide healthier alternatives for our students.  You can work with your classroom teacher to make appropriate choices related to food.

Regarding allergens and food, please do not send snacks with nuts to any of our classrooms.  Your classroom teacher will send additional information through the Monday folders if there are other health concerns in the classroom that your son/daughter is in this year.

Thank you for your help with our snack and food policy.  If you ever have questions, please contact your classroom teacher or the main office for more information.

Elementary Parenting Workshops (K-5)

The Olympia School District is pleased to offer free child development workshops with Candyce Lund Bollinger. Bollinger is a parent educator and private parenting counselor in Washington State and has been practicing for more than 35 years.  All workshops will be held at Olympia Regional Learning Academy and will run from 6:30-8:30 PM on the nights described below.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018:  Positive Discipline

  • This workshop is designed to give parents a map and techniques to facilitate healthy discipline.

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019:  Safety Without Fear

  • A workshop designed for parents to help facilitate their children having self-skills for personal safety, without increasing anxiety and fear in their children.

Tuesday, May 14th, 2019:  Anger

  • A workshop designed to help parents understand anger, as well as learn tools to manage anger in themselves and their children.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE MATTERS

We want you – at school! Being Here is Half the Battle. It’s not in to be out. Catchy slogans, maybe, but improving the attendance of all our students is something we truly aim to do this year. Last year our focus was on students who were here on time, all day, every day. This year, while our recognition of perfect attenders will continue, we also want to recognize our ‘regular attenders.’ These are the students who miss no more than one day a month, with an absence defined as being gone 50% or more of the school day. Stay tuned for more details on how we will celebrate our perfect attenders as well as our regular attenders, and join the fun. If you want to participate in putting together this ongoing celebration, contact Ruth Middlebrook.

Roosevelt Library News

The kids, other staff, and I are anxiously awaiting the completion of our beautiful new library! In the meantime, I am operating a little library in the room directly across the hall from the big one. Once construction is complete, I (with the help of a few dedicated volunteers) will start the process of moving back in and reconfiguring the library to fit the new space. This should take a few weeks. Stop by for a visit when the library reopens!

The Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled to take place during conference week again this year (Oct. 23-26). Kids, with their parents, can stop by between 12:15 and 4:00 and see what is new. As always, teacher requests will be available if you would like to purchase a book for your child’s classroom. Just a reminder, the library is not available for kids to wait during their siblings’ conferences, as we get very busy and cannot supervise kids during business hours. A percentage of book fair sales come back to our library allowing me to purchase more books. If you are unable to make it to the Book Fair in person, you can shop our online fair until Oct. 30. The online fair has additional books that we cannot fit in our school fair. Follow this link to shop online.

Book fair volunteers are still needed. A number of parents have already volunteered. I could still use a couple of volunteers on Thursday, Oct. 25th from 2:00-4:15 and Friday, Oct. 26th from 2:00-4:15. I could also use some volunteers to help packing up the book fair on Friday the 26th after we close. Thanks in advance for your help!

Just a reminder to please not repair books at home. I have specialized tools, materials, training, and experience in making book repairs that will last in a library setting. If I can repair a book, I am happy to do so. Thank you.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ORGANIZED WEEKLY RECESS SPORT ACTIVITY

Calling all parents!  We need volunteers to help out with a new recess sports activity.  Once a week during Thursday lunch recesses from 11:30 am-1 pm, there will be a structured sports activity that will introduce some basic skills for the sport, followed by a quick game.  The goal is to make friends and have fun while learning about a variety of sports.  Each month will introduce a new sport or game, with October being soccer month.  We need a few parent volunteers who can help supervise the kids while they learn and play.  Please contact Angie Warner-Rein at [email protected] to learn more and to sign up to help.  Volunteer paperwork must be completed and approved before you can participate.  Thank you!
