Principal’s Message

This past month, at the April PTA meeting, I discussed work we are doing as a staff related to equity.  In April, I led a staff development session related to implicit bias.  This work helped to raise our self-awareness as it relates to the impact of race in our school. In May, we will continue the work of building our self-awareness by examining systemic and societal bias that creates and maintains inequity, particularly for our students and families of color.  The goal of this work is to build and maintain positive relationships with ALL of our students and families.  

Along these same lines, I am interested in forming a community equity council that will meet monthly through the school year.  Its purpose will be to find ways to bring awareness, take action, and examine our current school practices through an equity lens. The first meeting will be held in the Roosevelt library on May 23rd at 6:30 PM.  If you are interested in attending, please send an email to Mr. Shaughnessy or Whitney Lawless

Lifeskill Assembly for May

We had changed the date for our monthly Lifeskill assembly.   The new date will be Wednesday, May 29th at 2:00 PM.  During this assembly, we will celebrate all of our efforts and progress made in the area of integrity and discuss perseverance.  As always, parents are welcome to attend.

5th Grade Camp CISPUS

All 5th grade students will be at CISPUS on May 8th through the 10th.  Here are a couple of important details to keep in mind:

  • All medications are due by Friday, May 3rd
  • Bring student luggage to school between 8:15 and 8:30 on Tuesday, May 7th
    • All luggage must be clearly labeled with student name. We will have orange ribbon to tie to luggage to signify that it is Roosevelt gear.
  • Bring students to school at 8:15 Wednesday, May 8th. Buses leave at 9:00 AM.
    • Students cannot ride the bus on Wednesday morning. They must be brought to school by 8:15 AM so that we can take attendance and get the kids ready for the long bus ride.
    • Parents are welcome to stay and see the kids off on Wednesday morning.


Smarter Balanced Assessments through May

As we enter the month of May, we enter our season of state assessments.  I will list the dates for each grade level below.  Please try to schedule appointments around these days and make sure that the kids are at school.  The days in blue are optional days in case anyone needs extra time for anything.


  • 3rd Grade:  May 7th, May 9th, May 10th, May 20th, May 22nd, May 24th 
  • 4th Grade:  May 6th, May 8th, May 10th, May 13th, May 15th, May 17th 
  • 5th Grade:  May 14th, May 16th, May 17th, May 21, May 23rd, May 24th, May 29th


Walk and Roll

It is almost time to Walk and Roll again.  This month, we will host our Walk and Roll event on Wednesday, May 8th.  Choose from 2 meeting locations:  Bigelow Park or the Olympia Little Theatre.  Both locations will gather at 8:30 AM and begin walking at 8:35 AM.  We will walk rain or shine.  Hope to see you all there!

Kindergarten Enrollment and Open House

Kindergarten enrollment is open now.  If you have a kindergarten aged student, or know somebody who does, please come in or encourage your friends to come in and register.  For all newly registered kindergarten families, we will have an open house on Thursday May 16th at 6:30 PM.  During this event, you will meet the teachers, see the classrooms, and learn all about what a day in kindergarten looks like.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Is Your Child Struggling in School?

If you ever find yourself in a position where you know your child is struggling with something in school and you feel like you need some help, please consider filling out our very simple help form.  You can access the help form from the home page of the Roosevelt websiteOpening in a new window or by clicking on this linkOpening in a new window.  The help form can be used to access any form of help (from academic to social/emotional).  School staff check the help form regularly and have a goal of reaching out within 24 hours or receiving the request.  We hope this will help in situations where you do not know where to go for help.

Battle of the Books

After much hard work, many books read, tough elimination battles held in the library, and our final battle that was held April 19, the winners of the 2019 Battle of the Books are…4th grade: The Epic Dog Lovers from Mrs. Adderley’s class (Hazel, Landen, Layla, Lexie, Megan, Rylan) and 5th grade: Stranger Goats from Mr. Sherrell’s class (Ben, Lillian, Lucas, Orion, Raven). Congratulations to all 4th and 5th graders for your efforts, and to our winning teams for going just a little bit further!

Summer Reading Program

The Timberland Regional Library (TRL) will hold assemblies for the kids on May 30th for their annual Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is A Universe of Stories. Each summer TRL hosts the program, which includes activities, prizes, performers, and encouragement to read great books over the months that kids are out of school. There is much research that shows that summer reading helps combat the “summer slump”, allowing kids to return in the fall ready to move on to the challenges of a higher grade level. Annual Book Swap

Another end of year event is the annual summer reading BOOK SWAP, that allows kids to trade in gently used books for books other kids have brought in. Books will be collected first thing in the morning May 28-31 and the kids will be called down by classroom to pick out new (to them) books on Tuesday, June 4. Kids can bring in, and take up to 3 books, in good condition. Sorry, but no board books will be accepted. The book swap is a great, free way to recycle books your kids have read and no longer want.

Time Garden Update

As you have noticed, big changes have been happening to the garden at the front entrance at Roosevelt! The garden was leveled in order to make it more accessible and to add irrigation. All of the commemorative bricks and the sundial mosaics have been saved with the goal of installing them in a new garden area at the rear of the school in the future. For the new front garden area, we will be focusing on drought tolerant and sensory stimulating plants. May Movie Night Featuring “The Princess Bride,” Friday, May 3rd, 6:30pm

Join us for the last PTA Family Movie Night of the school year on Friday, May 3rd, featuring “The Princess Bride.”  Doors open at 6:15 and the movie begins at 6:30. This free event is sponsored by the PTA. Bring cushions or blankets to sit on and enjoy free popcorn! Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the movie. Questions? Day of Science

The Pacific Science Center is coming to Roosevelt!  On Friday, May 31st, Pacific Science Center staff will present a day of classroom workshops, exhibits, and an all school assembly around the theme "Space Odyssey!"  This is an amazing program that gives fun, hands on science opportunities to all of our students!  We need volunteers to help out with unloading the truck, chaperoning the exhibits, and loading the truck at the end of the day.  Please sign up hereOpening in a new window and help make this an amazing day of adventures in science for Roosevelt students.  Thank you!


The 6th Annual Roosevelt 5k is only a month away!  5k registration that includes a snazzy race t-shirt is $25 and 5k registration that does not include a snazzy race t-shirt is $15. Fun in the Sun Carnival, Friday, June 7th 6pm-8pm at Roosevelt

Save the date for the Fun in the Sun free carnival for Roosevelt families!  There will be a bounce house obstacle course, pizza dinner, popcorn, cotton candy, a DJ, balloon animals, and more!  The event is free, but we are asking folks to RSVP at in a new window  so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone.   Check out the flyer at  this linkOpening in a new window for details.
